English Heritage Trust, Battle Abbey

The site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings and subsequent Abbey. A visit will tell the story of how the battle came to be here, the various elements involved and the outcome. Start off in our Visitor Centre and watch a short film about the Battle of Hastings before heading off on a tour around the site with an audio guide. You will see the remnants of the battlefield, ruins of the Abbey that was built afterwards to commemorate those who died in the battle and the Harold Stone, where Harold was killed. Finish your journey in the Gatehouse Museum and learn all about the Abbey and the history of the site after 1066. You can climb to the top of the Gatehouse and see the views of the town of Battle and surrounding countryside.

 

Facilities on site include a café, picnic area, toilets, shop and play area. Dogs are very welcome on leads. The average visit will take around 2.5hours.
